who are the biggest sellers of the decade?

Let’s talk little, let’s talk numbers…

Is it possible to definitively establish the ranking of rappers who have sold the most in 10 years?

Between the multiple changes in accounting rules, the criteria that differ from one country to another, the impossibility of collecting complete figures internationally, the streaming boom, the slow agony of downloading (rest in peace iTunes ), the fact that the opuses released at the beginning of the decade enjoyed a longer operating time compared to the others, the sales of singles, the sales of mixtapes, the albums released before 2010 which continue to sell… there is simply no way to answer this question clearly.

A choice was therefore made to focus on albums that have been certified on American soil by the very official Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the equivalent of our national SNEP.

If here again everything is not perfect since there is a delay in the allocation of the gold plates (500,000 copies sold) and platinum (1,000,0000), and because by definition the measuring instrument is not more precise (selling 1.1 million or selling 1.9 million is not exactly the same thing), it still gives a fairly reliable overview of the last ten years.

Find in this necessarily partial top the names of the 12 rappers* who panicked the counters from January 2010 to December 2020 (the figure in parentheses corresponds to the accumulation of certifications), all accompanied by a small analysis for once rather biased.

*Bye bye Post Malone

Big Sean (4.5)

Its certifications : Finally Famous in 2011 (platinum), Hall of Fame in 2013 (gold), Dark Sky Paradise in 2015 (double platinum), I Decided in 2017 (platinum)

So yes, Detroit 2 released a few months ago did quite well on the charts (even if it was his best album?), but the fact remains that Jhené Aiko’s boyfriend deserves his name to be slightly more often mentioned in heavyweight debates of the decade.

Role player at GOOD Music in its infancy, the now acolyte of Jay Z has indeed managed to find an artistic identity of its ownwhile displaying good commercial regularity.

Sean Don, or the mainstream rapper not as mainstream as he should be?

Wiz Khalifa (5)

Its certifications : Rolling Papers in 2011 (double platinum), Mac & Devin go to High School with Snoop Dogg in 2011 (gold), ONIFC in 2012 (platinum), Blacc Hollywood in 2014 (platinum), Rolling Papers 2 in 2018 (gold)

Does Cameron Jibril Thomaz care the least bit about the criticism he gets?

Not exactly idolized by critics and purists (to put it mildly), it nonetheless paved its way one foot in the game, one foot out.

Hot as embers until 2014the ex of Amber and Astrid, however, seems today more concerned with improving his sequences of strikes in MMA rather than breathing new life into his career.

Travis Scott (5)

Its certifications : Rodeo in 2015 (platinum), Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight in 2016 (platinum), Astroworld in 2018 (triple platinum)

Driven by the success of his mixtapes Owl Pharaoh and Days Before RodeoJacques Webster very quickly carved out a reputation as a child prodigy before indulging in the exercise of the first album.

Black belt in curation, he knew how to capture the spirit of the times in his own way by offering sound and image at the crossroads between Drake, Kid Cudi, Lil Wayne and Kanye West.

That and then also stage performances packed with energy, without forgetting his relationship with Kylie J. which allowed him to sell a lot of merch.

XXXtentacion (5.5)

Its certifications : 17 in 2017 (double platinum), ? in 2018 (triple platinum), SKINS in 2018 (gold)

Controversial figure if anyhowever, it would be unfair to reduce Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy to his unforgivable misconduct.

Face of Soundcloud rap, his music indeed translated better than anyone all the disarray and all the melancholy of part of his generation.

Accessible without falling into the trap of being too easy, the two small albums recorded during his lifetime deserve to continue to be listened to so much his touch remains inimitable.

REP

Kendrick Lamar (7.5)

Its certifications : Section.80 in 2011 (gold), good kid, mAd city in 2012 (triple platinum), To Pimp A Butterfly in 2015 (platinum), DAMN in 2017 (triple platinum)

Kung Fu Kenny or the man who reconciles quantity and quality.

Already, because in 2015 To Pimp a Butterfly rose to first place in sales in all major English-speaking countries (the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom).

Then, because the very (very) good DAMN has passed the 3 million mark without blushing.

And finally, because in 2018, six years after its release, good kid, mAd city was still ranked in the 80 best-selling albums, and that in addition at the end of last year it is reassembled neither seen nor known in the Top 10 Billboard !

Future (8)

Its certifications : Pluto in 2012 (gold), Honest in 2014 (gold), Dirty Sprite 2 in 2015 (double platinum), What a Time to Be Alive in 2015 (platinum), Evol in 2016 (platinum), Hndrxx in 2017 (gold), future in 2017 (platinum), Future Hndrxx Presents: The WIZRD of Future in 2019 (gold), High Off Life in 2020 (platinum)

Stakhanovist of the trap, what is perhaps most surprising in Nayvadius DeMun Wilburn, even more his thirty projects released in ten years (!), is his unfailing endurance.

Far from showing the slightest sign of losing steam at 37, her last baby, High Off Lifenot only hit hard as usual, but in doing so he allowed him to earning her 110th Billboard Hot 100 chart hit.

The fourth artist in the history of music to cross this threshold, he can be proud of having exceeded big names of the caliber of Nicki Minaj (109), Elvis Presley (109), Kanye West (107), Chris Brown ( 101) and Jay Z (100).

J. Cole (8)

Its certifications : Cole World: The Sideline Story in 2011 (platinum), Born Sinner in 2013 (double platinum), 2014 Forest Drive Hill in 2014 (triple platinum), 4 Your Eyez Only in 2016 (platinum), K.O.D. in 2018 (platinum)

What’s good about J.Cole (finally for those who love J.Cole), it is that with him one is rarely surprised : every two years the guy records an album in his corner, makes it a point of honor not to grant any feat, ranks number 1 in the first week, then goes off to win the million.

Now at the head of one of the strongest discographies, he nevertheless continues to sorry for his detractors who see in him only blandness and boredom.

Everyone has their side.

Nicki Minaj (8)

Its certifications : Pink Friday in 2011 (triple platinum), Pink Friday: Novel reloaded in 2012 (double platinum), The Pinkprint in 2014 (double platinum), Queen in 2018 (platinum)

“To be the Queen of Rap, it’s simple / You have to sell, you have to have plaques”

That’s what the first lady of the YMCMB crew was rapping on Make Love in 2017. And frankly at the moment T, no one could dispute his place on the throne.

Certainly after that there was Cardi B and the wet firecracker Queen which have damaged its image quite a bit, but this only prevents Nicki is indeed the one who weighs.

Paradoxically, however, it is when she sings the song that she sells the most – read this paper which compares “Pop Nicki” to “Rap Nicki”.

Eminem (9)

Its certifications : Recovery in 2010 (triple platinum), The Marshall Mathers LP 2 in 2013 (quadruple platinum), revival in 2017 (gold), Suicide bomber in 2018 (platinum), Music to Be Murdered By in 2020 (gold)

King of the first part of the 2000s, the Slim Shady went on to just missed finishing in the background due to an acute addiction to anxiolytics.

Stung after his Relapse of 2009 with which he was hardly satisfied, he laid the following year Recovery, best-selling album of 2010 internationally.

On autopilot since then, his music still cleaves as much, but not for the same reasons as before. We do not write you more on the subject, so much the slightest criticism of him unleashes his stands in the comments.

Lil Wayne (10)

Its certifications : Rebirth in 2010 (platinum), I Am Not a Human Being in 2010 (platinum), Tha Carter IV in 2011 (quintuple platinum), I Am Not a Human Being 2 in 2013 (double platinum), Tha Carter V in 2018 (platinum)

So over the top in the late 00s (his Carter III released in 2008 has just been crowned six times platinum!), in addition to having allowed himself to reach the million mark with one of the worst albums in the history of music, Weezy F. managed to keep his head above water despite a prison sentence for carrying a weapon, a series of overdoses and an unnamed legal entanglement with his daddy Birdman.

Back to business with a Carter V very good bills, the rapper without whom no other rapper who came after him would be the same will he be able to maintain this rhythm as he approaches his forties?

Start response with I Am Not a Human Being 3 expected in the coming weeks.

Kanye West (13)

Its certifications : My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in 2010 (triple platinum), Watch The Throne with Jay Z in 2011 (quintuple platinum), Yeezus in 2013 (double platinum), The Life of Pablo in 2016 (double platinum), Yes in 2018 (gold), jesus is king in 2019 (gold)

If Kanye West has been taunted at all costs (not without reason) in recent seasons, this kind of classification has the merit of reminding his undivided domination of the time of his splendor.

It’s very simple: just like Lil Wayne, without his genius the US rap scene wouldn’t be the same.

Author of one of the most beautiful records of the decade with MBDTF following his incident, on the whole benign, with Taylor Swift, on the eve of his divorce from Kim Kardashian, we can not help but secretly hope that the unparalleled chaos that must currently reign in his head gives birth to a new masterpiece.

Drake (25)

Its certifications : Thank Me Later in 2010 (platinum), Take Care in 2011 (sixfold platinum), Nothing Was The Same in 2013 (quadruple platinum), If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late in 2015 (double platinum), What a Time to Be Alive in 2015 (platinum), Views in 2016 (sixtuple platinum), Scorpio in 2018 (quintuple platinum)

El Drake!

Most Streamed Artist everauthor of 222 songs classified in the Hot 100, best contender of his generation to win a diamond disc, it’s an understatement to say that Aubrey Graham triumphed on all fronts.

With a science of marketing and staging that belong only to him, for a few albums he doesn’t really make any effort on the music side anymore.

If for the moment all is well, not say that the string does not end up breaking. Meeting with Certified Lover Boy to confirm these doubts or on the contrary to initiate a new era?
