The playlist of disc releases for September 24

Our Friday, September 24 album releases playlist opens with a fabulous cover of “Venus in Furs” by Andrew Bird, before giving way to 27 artists offering an original release and 3 reissues.

MAGIC RECOMMENDATIONS

VARIOUS ARTISTS
I’ll Be Your Mirror: A Tribute to the Velvet Underground & Nico
(UMG RECORDINGS)

The Dream Team of Anglo-Saxon pop (American, but not only) meets to record an album of cult covers Velvet Underground & Nico of 1967. The revival of Venus in Furs by Andrew Bird and Lucius is extraordinarily accomplished. The entire disc is worth a listen – which is not always the case for such an exercise.

CALEB LANDRY JONES
Gadzooks Vol 1
(SACRED BONES RECORDS)
Playlist track: Never Wet

Actor and rocker, Caleb Landry Jones had announced this new album in the sequence of the Cannes Film Festival, which awarded him the Palme d’Interprétation Masculine for his role in Nitram. The Texan excels on both sides of his performances.

SUFJAN STEVENS & ANGELO DE AUGUSTINE
A Beginner’s Mind
(ASTHMATIC KIRRY RECORDS / MODULOR)
Playlist track: Back to Oz

Sufjan Stevens returns to songwriting and song format for the first time since his album The Ascension one year ago. He does this with Angelo de Augustine, the West Coast artist he took under his wing and who has (already) released three albums in recent years. The result is very beautiful, even if it is difficult to affirm that the universe of the two artists is sublimated in contact with the other.

ANDY SCHAUF
Wilds
(ANTI)
Playlist track: jaywalker

The career of Andy Shauf is disturbing in that the Canadian connects two discs in quick succession before disappearing four years to return with two albums in two years. Wilds is as such the little brother of The Neon Skyline (2020), whose splendor he shares.

SPENCER CULLUM
Spencer Cullum’s coin collection
(FULL TIME HOBBY)
Playlist track: Falling to Pieces

An English musician now based in Nashville, Spencer Cullum is a reference in the pedal steel guitar. His first album draws as much on the psychedelic pop of the sixties and seventies as on country-referenced sounds. The Full Time Hobby label, which is never wrong, had a good ear once again.

GENERAL ELEKTRIKS
Party Like A Human
(3RD OFFICE / WAGRAM)
Playlist track: Pick up the pieces

Almost twenty years of career for the electro-pop (and funk, and soul, and …) project of Hervé Salters. Now based in Berlin, the keyboardist remains an international hit machine.

MACIE STEWART
Mouth full of glass
(ORINDAL RECORDS)
Playlist track: Finally

Macie Stewart is one half of the Ohmme duo. Mouth full of glass is the first solo effort from the Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist songwriter. Recorded in near autarky, Mouth full of glass is the intimate exploration of a person getting to know themselves.

ADA LEA
one hand on the steering wheel the other sewing a garden
(SADDLE CREEK)
Playlist track: hurt

Ada Lea is the diminutive of Alexandra Levy, Montreal songwriter who tells here, on piano mats or guitars, personal stories that contribute to her maturity.

ALBIN DE LA SIMONE
happy ending
(SOONER OR LATER)
Playlist track: A friend

Recently active and solicited in drawing and graphic design, Albin de la Simone delivers a sixth entirely instrumental album.

FLAVIEN BERGER
From the wasteland
(PANEUROPEAN RECORDINGS)
Playlist track: they will last long

Mainly instrumental, From the wasteland is a series of essays that are more ambient music than traditional pop. Flavien Berger is releasing this astonishing album in cassette form.
