Muriel Moreno and Daniel Chenevez have been very famous for their respective careers as a French singer, songwriter, producer and DJ, and French singer-songwriter and director of music videos. Of the same name as a famous title by Julien Clerc, niagara had a success comparable to that of the tandem Slimane and Vitaa, from the 1980s to the beginning of the 1990s. His singles all brought him to the top of the charts as much as his four studio albums certified gold records.

At the crossroads of two destinies

niagara is above all the story of three young French people, the best known of whom are Muriel Moreno and Daniel Chenevez. Linked by fate, they followed parallel paths that crossed at the intersection of their passion for music in 1981.

From her real name Muriel Laporte, Muriel Moreno was born on January 24, 1963 in Chinon in the Indre-et-Loire. She spent her childhood there alongside her father, a notary, and her mother, a high school natural science teacher. Young Muriel stayed there until she was 10 years old. Then she moved to Nantes with her family.

Passionate about literature, she began reading the works of Simone de Beauvoir and Benoîte Groult, among other writers, when she was only 13 years old. It is therefore quite natural that she then studied literature before orienting herself in art history in Rennes. His studies were sanctioned by a master’s degree obtained with very good mention.

It was in 1981 that Muriel Moreno met Daniel Chenevez in Rennes. Daniel Chenevez was born in Nancy on June 12, 1959. His family then traveled to many cities including Amiens and Lyon. It was in Vannes that the young Daniel Chenevez passed the baccalaureate. He then worked there as a concert organizer before enrolling in sociology at the University of Rennes.

He also chose the history option and turned to the study of modern literature. At the same time, Daniel has alternately worked as a pianist in a pizzeria, summer camp monitor, “cotton candy” salesman, fine arts model and disc jockey in a nightclub for homosexuals. From 1979 to 1980, he was the singer of the groups Uniform and Dissidence Opera.

When he met Muriel Moreno, the two founded a music group which they called The spies. It is under this name that the duo released their first 45 rpm, Mata Hari. At the same time, Muriel continued her studies by providing DJ entertainment in Rennes.

Explosion and popular recognition

In 1983, niagara took part in the Breton branch of the “Coup de talent dans l’hexagone” operation, an organization of the French Ministry of Culture. Selected by the Rennes jury, the group recorded another 45 rpm titled Tchiki Boom. Muriel Moreno and Daniel Chenevez’s second single became such a popular hit that it broke into the Top 50. It earned the band a signing with Polydor.

The group’s other singles, Love at the beach and I have to go away, have had the same success. Released in May and October 1986 respectively, their music videos were directed by Daniel Chenevez.

It was at the height of the success of the trio that José Tamarin, guitarist of the group, left niagara in 1986. Some time later, the group’s first single reduced to a musician and a singer preceded the release of their first studio album titled One more last kiss.

Now based in Paris, the members of niagara regularly performed on stage throughout France. In 1987, they led a major national tour which passed through the Olympia.

On April 22, 1988, niagara released their second album titled What hell ! It consisted of eleven titles including Enough ! and winter sun who appeared in the Top 50. What hell ! was distributed to thirteen countries and led the band on a five-month European tour sponsored by MTV Europe.

The duo’s third album, Religion, was released in 1990 by Polydor Records. There were also eleven titles including the single I saw, ranked in the French Top 50. The album was certified double gold by the Syndicat National de l’Édition Phonographique.

The release of this album led to another European tour which passed through the Zenith in Paris and a stadium in Moscow where niagara got more than 15,000 people running.

In 1992, the group’s last studio album, The truth, is out. Recorded in Brussels and New York, and produced by Daniel Chenevez, the album was also produced by Polydor. The two titles The truth counted more than the previous albums of the group did not allow him to meet the same success. The duo then separated.

After their separation, Muriel Moreno and Daniel Chenevez pursued their careers as solo singers. In 2002, the group received a new gold record for flamesa compilation consisting of 18 remastered tracks. flames recorded sales of over 100,000 copies in two months.

In 1994, Muriel Moreno had a studio installed in her house in the 11th arrondissement of Paris. She then wrote and recorded her personal titles, some of which ended up in All alonehis first solo album released on May 10, 1996 on the label EastWest.

Product of 18 months of work, All alone was a concentrate of sounds from the guitar, keyboards and drums played by its author who left it to Christian Lechevretel to finalize it at the Davout studio. There were 14 titles. The album, however, did not enjoy the commercial success of albums by niagara.

In 2000, she released the album Required Items from which emanated a perfume of electronic music whose mysteries she had just learned. She then met Marc Collin with whom she founded the group Dynamo. The duo released a single titled River of No Return in 2004. In 2010, Muriel Moreno put away her microphone. From then on, she embarked on fitness after training at the Institute of Fitness Trades. She thus became a teacher of yoga and body exercises, teaching in particular the Pilates method. We saw her in several clubs in Paris and its region.

Daniel Chenevez has released two singles, Eccentric and Hypnosis in February 1997. He was also the producer of several artists such as The Calamities and Helena Noguerra. In 2004 he wrote an album for Karen Mulder. In 2010 he signed the soundtrack of the film We three by Renaud-Bertrand, I want to be you.

Four years later he released the digital EP Eroticism, Song 25.7a six-track electro-rock album mixed by Dominique Blanc-Francard, on April 17, 2014. Since this year, the singer has not appeared on the radar anymore.
