QUEBEC. CLASSICA Festival: May 27 – June 19, 2022! 12th edition, from Monteverdi to Morricone. CLASSIC has been, since its first edition, a unifying urban festival, open to the general public, among the most exemplary there is. From its historic heart (the center of Saint-Lambert, in Montérégie, south of Montreal), the largest summer festival in Quebec displays from May 27, a promising program, at the same time eclectic, diverse, generous, very accessible; the idea of Mark Boucher, founder and artistic director succeeded in the delicate equation of the classical and the general public, associating all musical forms (opera, baroque, chamber music, sacred choir, symphonic performance, etc.), all genres (from classical to cinema, as the 2022 title suggests, from Monteverdi to Morricone), all formats (free outdoor concerts and indoor programs, etc.). CLASSICA anticipates all desires, and even surprises connoisseurs with its open and innovative spirit which decompartmentalizes and considerably renews the experience of classical music.
Thereby 22 gigs are advertised (“at low prices”) in Saint-Lambert and in several towns in Montérégie: Varennes, Mirabel, Boucherville and Longueuil. Make way for the accents and vertigo of Italian passion, Claudio Monteverdi (the creator of baroque opera) to the composer for the cinema Ennio Morriconebetween “sensuality and lyricism”…
Among the highlights of an abundant, eclectic cycle: a privileged place concerns sacred music and choral vertigo: Stabat Mater (Pergolesi / Vivaldi, Saint-Lambert, May 28; Sances / Alessandro Scarlatti, Saint-Lambert June 11), Vespers of the Virgin (Boucher ville, June 5) and motets (Canti Amorosi, Saint-Lambert, May 31) by Monteverdi; Puccini’s Messa di Gloria (Varennes, May 27); Rossini’s Small Solemn Mass (Saint-Lambert, June 3). For his part, the pianist Jean-Philippe Sylvestere, artist familiar with the festival, will introduce the music of Nino Rota (Saint-Lambert, June 16)…
A focus is reserved for Four Seasons of Vivaldi, a timeless poetic fresco, revealed in its original dressing, ie baroque (June 9); or re-evaluated in a mix – become legendary, designed in 2012 by Max Richter (Vivaldi reloaded, Saint-Lambert, June 5 by the violinist Marc Djokithis Montérégie Chamber Orchestra)…
Apotheosis of the 2022 edition, the tribute to Morricone takes place on Friday June 17 (Longueil, St-Antoine de Padoue Co-Cathedral) with the Longueuil Symphony Orchestra and Florence K.under the direction of the violinist Alexandre DaCosta (“magic soundtracks” from Morricone’s films, including Once Upon a Time in the West, Cinema Paradiso and The Mission, etc.).
