The tale of the strange meeting of two little girls whose paths could never cross.

Nelly is eight years old and has just lost her grandmother. She leaves with her parents to empty the childhood home of her mother, Marion. Nelly is happy to explore this house and the surrounding woods where her mother had built a cabin. One morning, sadness pushes her mother to leave. This is where Nelly meets a little girl in the woods. She is building a cabin, she is her age and her name is Marion. It’s his little mama.

Little momreleased in theaters on June 2, 2021, is the fifth feature film written and directed by Céline Sciamma, her fifth portrait of women, in childhood, adolescence or adulthood, in a series inaugurated in 2007 by Birth of octopuses, hailed by the Louis Delluc Prize and a selection at Cannes for the golden camera and in the section In some perspective. This was the first stage of a faultless journey, confirmed by two major films, Tomboy, awarded at Berlin in 2011, and Portrait of the young girl on fire, Best Screenplay Award at Cannes in 2019. Band of Girls, released in 2014, did not seem to me at the level of the other four films.

Little momwith a fluid staging, as refined as that of the other films, with dialogues that ring true, brush with delicacy, in a tone of a fantastic tale, the blossoming of a fusional intimacy between two little girls, their relationship with their mother, Nelly’s sweet complicity with her father, her first encounter with death, that of her grandmother, with the illness from which Marion and her mother suffer.

Little mom

Little mom benefits from the photography of Claire Mathon, several times rewarded for Portrait of the girl on firein particular by a Caesar and by a New York Film Critics Circle Award.

Marion and Nelly are interpreted by two twins, Gabrielle and Joséphine Sanz, fairly well directed, whose resemblance reinforces the fantastic flavor of the tale, further accentuated by the disturbing similarity of Marion’s house and that of Nelly’s grandmother, as well as by the strange shapes drawn by the shadow of the trees projected by the light of the sun or the moon. Nina Meurisse, seen recently in the interesting Mixte miniseries on the opening of high schools to sexual diversity, and Stéphane Varupenne, member of the Comédie Française, embody Nelly’s parents with the required sobriety.

Little mom adds to these advantages the original composition by Jean-Baptiste de Laubier, orchestrated by Arthur Simonini, who provided the musical illustration for
Portrait of the girl on fire. An appreciable contribution despite its discretion: a few bars during the credits, three minutes in one of the final scenes and the accompaniment of the credits.

This video edition gives Little momafter a theatrical release in the midst of a health crisis, a second chance to meet the audience it deserves.

Céline Sciamma recounts the genesis of the film, the idea of a little girl meeting her still-child mother, who came during the writing of Portrait of the girl on fire, its desire to include children who have experienced “an impressive flood of crises and collective ordeals in recent years” with the attacks and the pandemic. ” Little mom is a new proposal for time travel, an intimate journey where the issue is neither the future nor the past, but shared time. » The studio allowed the construction of a « custom-made house (…) an exciting work ». Also imagined for the “child spectator, (…) Little mom is dreamed of as an equal experience for adults and children. The booklet closes on the casting, on the work with the two little girls, on the Music of the futurecomposed by Jean-Baptiste de Laubier/Para One for which she wrote the lyrics, on the filmography of the director and on the technical and artistic sheet of the film.

The digital image (1.85:1, 1080p, AVC), captured with the same equipment as the Portrait of the girl on fireis bright and precise, with the same delicate texture, with natural colors, pleasantly contrasting.

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 sound (with a stereo alternative), also very neat, enveloping in the outdoor scenes dominated by the rustling of the wind in the forest, ending in the intimacy of the dialogues.

The only downside is the intelligibility of the dialogues, occasionally compromised by a lack of articulation, a defect already noted forPortrait of the girl on fire.
