A Franco-German vocal ensemble in residence in Puisaye

In Sainte-Colombe-sur-Loing, harmonious voices escape from the rural hearth. The Friends of Claudio are in full rehearsal, under the baton of Wolfgang Erber. The Franco-German vocal ensemble is in residence in Puisaye for a week, before a general public rehearsal, Friday August 5, in the village church, then a concert, Saturday August 6, 2022, at Auxerre cathedral (see below).

“We are in a project vocal ensemble, explains Moïse Mayo, president of the association Les Amis de Claudio. We meet two to three times a year, including a one-week residence in France, which culminates in a concert.” The previous residencies took place in Meursault, between 2015 and 2017, then in the Vercors.

The peace and beauty of Puisaye

This week in Puisaye and Yonne is a first. It is organized by one of the choristers, Sylvie Meyer, who lives in Sainte-Colombe. “It’s an opportunity for the choristers to change corners, to discover another region. And Puisaye is a beautiful region.” The town hall has made available the rural home for the rehearsals and the church for the dress rehearsal. The rural foyer has suspended acoustic panels. “It’s a good rehearsal room”, notes Wolfgang Erber, adding, amused: “I sometimes have a little difficulty concentrating during rehearsals, because I can see this very beautiful landscape through the windows.”

The choristers reside in lodges in the area. They limit themselves to two daily rehearsals, one in the morning, the other in the afternoon or evening. That is, in total, 6 hours of singing per day. “It’s very intensive, breaks are necessary”, comments Sylvie Meyer.

The ensemble is made up of about forty choristers, some professionals, most singing in other choirs. “Les Amis de Claudio was born in 2007, when two friends wanted to sing Vespers of the Virgin by Claudio Monteverdi, with all their friends from the different choirs to which they had belonged, says Sylvie Meyer. What had been envisaged as a unique Franco-German project, has become a long-term adventure.”
